Stainless Steel can build to 50% of its workforce

The inputs of our industry and Sassda’s subsequent submission to government which outlined how the South African stainless steel sector can safely re-open when the country moves to Level 4 of the current COVID-19 lockdown tomorrow, have yielded significant success. In fact, the results have gone above and beyond our expectations, which shows what can be achieved when our industry follows the mantra of  ‘strength in numbers’.

After consulting with industry leaders, the consensus is that the downstream steel industry falls under Table 1, Part C6 of the gazetted regulations i.e. up to 50% employment based on the following direct extract from the latest regulations; “Manufacturing of steels, metals and other products rail and ship building (including components) scaling up in phases to 50% of the workforce albeit it subject to STRICT health protocols.

Sassda Executive Director Michel Basson comments; “Our submission on Tuesday had the desired effect on government’s thinking and bodes well for our continued co-operation with the relevant departments with whom we have already built a strong relationship. We are proud to represent the voice of South African stainless steel in our discussions with them and as such, welcome your ongoing input and viewpoints which we can feed through via the appropriate channels”
