Development Initiative

Market Development projects in South Africa have introduced stainless steel by materials – and import substitution to a great many new applications – from clothes pegs to bridge supports.  But a recent press report suggests that an even greater initiative is taking place elsewhere.

A Cape Town gynaecologist has announced the design of an “anti-rape device” which can be “safely” worn by women to “inspire confidence”.  The device “will certainly make the rapist desist.  He would have to seek medical attention afterwards and would be easily identifiable.”  How such identification would be made has not been publicised: what has been announced is the fact that major components of the device are “a stainless steel disc and four sharpened spikes…”

As this follows a similar Durban invention (which fires a dart at the attacker), a considerable new market is expected.  Estimates of tonnage offtake for stainless steel are under review.
