BAML analysts warn of price-crushing ‘Steelmageddon’ steel glut in US



Seeking Alpha reported that US steel capacity is set to increase by 20% around 2022, pushing down pricings for steel commodities, BofA Merrill Lynch warns as it dubs the upcoming several years of turmoil as “Steelmageddon.”

The price crushing steel glut will sweep though the industry over the next few years as new project start-ups create an oversupply of steel commodities, the firm says, after which the US industry will emerge with a smaller footprint as new electric arc furnaces replace older blast furnaces.

Dti partners with the World Bank to improve business environment and drive investmenT


The Department of Trade and Industry (dti) and the World Bank on Monday signed an advisory services partnership that is aimed at improving the business environment for domestic entrepreneurs. 

The agreement is also aimed at undertaking policy and institutional reform to enhance foreign direct investment inflows.

The project will deploy a Country Private Sector Diagnostic, which is a standard World Bank tool used to identify industry sectors that can attract significant domestic and foreign investments and deliver positive development impacts in the near term, if key inhibitors are addressed.

BMZ steps up presence in Africa


BelTA reported that the Belarusian steel mill BMZ intends to step up its presence in Africa in 2019.  In January-February 2019 BMZ’s shipments to Arian countries increased considerably in monetary terms and physical terms and exceeded 57,000 tonnes.

The figure represents about 15% of the company’s total exports.  Negotiations with a potential customer from Senegal took place at BMZ early March for the sake of securing the achieved results.  The meeting touched upon the timeframe and volumes of the first deliveries.  Prospects of expanding export to Niger, Chad, Mali and Mauritania were mentioned.
