Sassda calls for Entries to 2018 Awards

 

The biennial Sassda Columbus Stainless Awards will once again take place in 2018. The theme for this year’s Sassda Columbus Stainless Awards is “Celebrating Innovation”.

These prestigious awards serve to recognise and applaud exceptional achievements within the stainless steel industry and aim to recognise and promote excellence, innovation and entrepreneurial development as well as profile world-class thinking and success at both a local and international level.

Finalists and winners will be selected from the entries by a panel of well respected judges and the winners will be announced at a Gala Awards  banquet to be held on 25 October 2018 at The Indaba Hotel, Fourways in Johannesburg. Sassda Executive Director John Tarboton says: “The theme for this year, celebrating innovation, was chosen as it is innovation that will allow our industry to adapt and thrive as we enter the 4th Industrial Revolution.”

The awards are open to individuals and companies (locally and abroad) that are involved in the design, production, conversion, distribution and use or  specification of stainless steel. Entrants do not need to be members of Sassda.

 

The criteria for entries is as follows:

Excellence – Exceptional work, concepts and execution.

Innovation – Creativity, originality and advancement.

Sustainability – For the business and the environment.

Efficiency – Keeping to deadlines and minimising costs.

Quality – Of the products and the work done.

Impact on the Environment – Ensuring minimal carbon footprint.

Job Creation – Employment opportunities created.

This year, the categories have been expanded to 5 main categories, with 17 sub categories for entrants to choose from. Entrants can enter into more than one category and can enter as many projects and products as they wish. Entry to the awards is free of charge.

CATEGORY 1: SUPPORT AWARDS

The Student Award

Criteria: Outstanding contribution to the knowledge, understanding or application of stainless steel.

Environmental Award

Criteria: Outstanding stainless steel products that have exemplified inspiration, vision, innovation, leadership and action for the environment or have improved environmental measures in the manufacturing or processing of stainless steels.

Services Award

Criteria: Excellent services to the stainless steel conversion and/or beneficiation industry, including excellent products and services that have aided  the industry to become more efficient or knowledgeable and/ or enhanced the quality of the stainless steel product being manufactured.

Welding Award

Criteria: Innovative application of welding in manufacturing to minimise the cost but optimise the quality of fabricated products.

Manufacturing Innovation Award

Criteria: Innovation in a manufacturing process or technique which uses or is used for producing stainless steel products, which significantly improves the operational simplicity, maintenance, efficiency, reliability, throughput and consumption of stainless steel.

CATEGORY 2: SECTOR AWARDS

Art Award

Criteria: The most innovative, creative, inspiring or dramatic use of stainless steel in an art application.

Consumerware, Hospitality & Catering Award

Criteria: The most functional, innovative and effective use of stainless steel in a consumerware, hospitality or catering application.

Agroprocessing, Food and Beverage Award

Criteria: Innovative design and use of stainless steel in the agro processing and food and beverage industry.

Architecture, Building & Construction Award

Criteria: Innovative, extensive, productive and excellent use of stainless steel in a commercial, industrial or domestic structure or in an engineering,
community or urban project. The subject should be aesthetically pleasing, environmentally and user friendly and cost efficient with low maintenance.

Engineering Award

Criteria: Substantial and innovative application of stainless steel in an engineering project.

CATEGORY 3: PRODUCT AWARDS

Duplex Stainless Steel Award

Criteria: The use of duplex stainless steels in an application that demonstrates innovation, life-cycle cost effectiveness, substitution and growth potential.

Ferritic Stainless Steel Award

Criteria: Use of ferritic stainless steels in an application that demonstrates innovation, life-cycle cost effectiveness, substitution and growth potential.

Product Development Award

Criteria: An innovative new product or existing product development in stainless steel exhibiting functionality, environmental performance, design
for recycling, improvement over existing product quality, environmental friendliness, upliftment of productivity or lifestyle, enhanced  competitiveness and operative simplicity.

CATEGORY 4: BUSINESS AWARDS

Most Transformed Business Award

Criteria: The most transformed company that has successfully implemented skills development, communicated the corporate culture of diversity throughout the workforce and what the total workforce of the company, including Board, Executive Management and Senior Leadership, is compared to that of the country’s national population demographics.

Export Achievement Award

Criteria: Providing significant growth in export sales through innovation, quality and effectiveness (volume, value or both).

Business Excellence Award

Criteria: Awards businesses for building a sustainable, long-term, thriving business that has demonstrated innovative use of stainless steel in the
design and development of products, to become a global leader in the field of excellence.

CATEGORY 5: GRAND PRIX AWARDS

Lifetime Achievement Award

Criteria: Recognising the person or persons who have made an outstanding contribution to Sassda and the stainless
steel industry.

Overall Winner

Criteria: The most successful and outstanding winner from all the categories.

Entries for the Sassda Columbus Stainless Awards close on 15 September 2018 and will be judged by an independent panel of judges drawn from
recognised professionals, representing all sectors of industry. Finalists and winners will be announced at a Gala Banquet on the 25 October 2018.
