Vacuum Insulated CO2 Transport Tanker Fabricated in Stainless Steel by Cryogenic & Nuclear Products
Cryogenic & Nuclear Products (Pty) Ltd, situated in Spartan, have recently delivered a vacuum insulated CO2 Road Tanker fabricated in their workshop.
Tankers for transporting CO2 are not usually vacuum insulated but vacuum insulation was adopted to attain better performance in transporting liquid CO2 at cryogenic temperatures (down to - 50° C).
The outer shell was fabricated in 3CR12 material which was chosen for its increased strength thus yielding greater payloads. The inner shell was fabricated in AISI 304 stainless steel, another unusual choice of material.
By using vacuum insulation, the need for refrigeration equipment was done away with, and this saving more than paid for the increased material cost in using stainless steel. It also results in a saving in down-time for maintenance of the refrigeration plant. This vessel was built in accordance with ADR Specification (European Agreement concerning International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) and manufactured under licence to Lox, California.
