Safe, Clean Milk
Stainless steel has been chosen as the most suitable material for bulk storage tanks in an experiment now being conducted by the Milk Board at the Cape. The experiment is being undertaken to investigate the best methods of delivering safe, clean milk in bulk from the producer to the consumer.
The stainless steel bulk storage tanks being used in the experiment were supplied by the Cape Town firm of Plaas-Koel (Edms.) Beperk. They were specially designed and fabricated for quick and efficient cleansing and were approved by the South African Bureau of Weights and Measures.
For the farmer the bulk milk system means higher net income through savings in labour, greater quantities of milk sold and better of milk.
And stainless steel has played a leading role in this great development.
Now, a Cape Town firm, Plaas-Koel (Edms.) Bpk., which is associated with Albert More (Pty.) Ltd., have introduced the use of stainless steel bulk storage tanks to the South African dairy industry by supplying the Milk Board with stainless steel bulk tanks for an experiment in bulk storage in the Cape.
The bulk handling of milk is the process of cooling and storing farm-produced milk in refrigerated stainless steel tanks prior to collection and transportation to the processing plant by tank trucks. It has a number of advantages over the old-fashioned system of milk churns.
The tanks supplied to the Milk Board by Plaas-Koel were specially fabricated for quick, efficient cleansing and all surfaces in contact with milk were highly polished. The manufacture of ice is thermostatically controlled so that the correct quantity of ice required is available at all times, thus saving power.
The circulation pump is of the removable type and is easily accessible. The stirring blade revolves at 35 to 40 r.p.m. and stirs the milk gently but firmly. And the blade is of a special design to ensure that the milk is thoroughly stirred but, at the same time, the slow speed at which it revolves prevents the milk from turning into butter.
These Plaas-Koel tanks were approved by the South African Bureau of Weights and Measures.
The accompanying photographs show some of the bulk storage tanks supplied by Plaas-Koel (Pty.) Ltd., P.O. Box 120, Paarden Eiland, Cape. It is a noteworthy achievement that this company supplied the bulk tanks for the Milk Board experiment in bulk storage. Plaas-Koel (Pty.) Ltd. is an associate company of Albert Moore (Pty.) Ltd.
