Iscor recently produced its first batch of stainless steel
Iscor’s Pretoria Works successfully produced its first test batch of stainless steel on 21 March 1996.
General Manager, Harry Delport says: “We are exactly on schedule with the conversion from carbon to stainless steel and the sight of the first slab coming out of the continuous caster was a sight to behold”.
He is equally enthusiastic about the quality and appearance of the stainless steel slabs. “The surface looks good and the tests we have done locally confirm that the quality conforms with international standards.
“In terms of our agreement with Nippon Steel, they are sending a team of experts in the next two weeks to again test the quality and to confirm our findings.”
Since the end of May, two more batches have successfully been produced and testing will continue until commercial production starts in July 1996.
