Handrails for export. A welder uses the Afrox consumable FAO9 to fabricate corrosion-resistant handrails at the Andrew Mentis factory in Elandsfontein.

An Afrox consumable (Transarc FAO9) which welds 3CR12 and stainless steel has been chosen by Andrew Mentis, the world’s largest fabricators of industrial gratings, for a large export order of stainless steel handrails.

The order, which is being manufactured at Andrew Mentis’ factory in Elandsfontein, is being shipped via Durban in containerised batches.  The Andrew Mentis company was awarded the State President’s Award for export achievement in the ‘70s.

Transarc FAO9 may be used for welding 304 and 306 [sic], as well as 3CR12 to mild steel.  It also has the ability to meet the high contractional stress levels normally associated with joining dissimilar materials, such as 3CR12 to mild steel.

The additional length of the 450 mm-long electrode means fewer starts and stops per rod.  This improves weld appearance and results in minimal rod stub losses.

FAO9 features a soft, stable arc with a low OCV which makes for easier striking (starting the weld) and low heat input.
