New appointments

Lesley Squires-Mortimer has taken to her new position as a director of the South African Stainless Steel Co-Operative Development Initiative with great enthusiasm.

With ten years at Middelburg Steel and Alloys under her belt, most recently as market research and product development manager, Lesley has the experience to make a contribution to the SSCDI.

She is looking forward to the challenge of increasing local consumption and exports of stainless steel and, if her enthusiasm is anything to go by, Lesley is well-equipped for the task.

Education and training

ISSF/Assda stainless course

Members are advised that the stainless course offered by Assda and ISSF is essentially the Sassda course.  The Sassda course is offered free of charge, and is run in all the major centres twice a year subject to demand.  For a nominal admin fee, it is also available as a self-study course.

Certificates are issued to all delegates who successfully complete a final written test.

Capsec US market research completed

The market research campaign conducted for Capsec has been completed on the East coast of the United States, and the first orders have already been received for locally-produced wine tanks.

The second phase of the market research project, involving the West coast of the United States, is already underway.  Sassda is confident that this will lead to major orders for the local wine tank industry, as the wine industry on the West coast is a major producer and is growing.

3CR12 conference

The 3CR12 conference, which was hosted by Sassda, reflected the dynamics of this modern metal by covering a diverse range of applications in different industries.

Leading speakers and delegates from South Africa and elsewhere in the world attended the two-day conference, which was held at the Sandton Convention Centre.  Many stayed over for the gala evening, which was the culmination of the Stainless Steel Awards programme.
