Sassda News – March 2015

Young Welders 2015

The 2015 Young Welder of the Year competition was a resounding success.

This year the South African Institute of Welding (SAIW) had 20 competitors from a variety of training colleges spread across the country. The spread of different training institutions that participated was encouraging with competitors from public TVET colleges, company in-house training academies as well as private training colleges. SAIW had a number of firsts in this year’s competition including the first time that virtual welding was showcased during the competition. In-line with the world skills programme, competitors had 22 hours to complete four projects using four welding processes. The projects utilised carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium and welding was undertaken in all positions.

The competitors were thoroughly put through their paces and once again produced excellent results. Sassda is a proud sponsor of the Young Welder of the Year competition.

The winner of this year’s competition is Jaco van Deventer of Steinmuller. Jaco will
receive further training to prepare him for the International Worldskills competition
which takes place during August in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Sassda revamps online database, publishes Buyers Guide

2015 Buyers GuideDuring the course of 2014 Sassda developed a new online database, which is
accessible via its website. The new database, accessible under the “Find a Supplier” tab on the Sassda website, ensures a greater ease of use for Sassda members’

prospective customers.

The database is split into 38 product categories and 13 service categories. These are designed to describe the market sector in which a product would be used, for example, “Agriculture” or the type of service, for example “Design Services”. Within the categories is a listing of some 1620 product lines, which cover the products and services of our more than 400 member companies. This is more than double the number of
products on the old database.

Individual member companies have updated their contact details, products and service lines. Participation in the database now stands at 90%, up from 72% previously, and the number of products listed has doubled. This is now Sassda’s most comprehensive resource ever.

The Buyers Guide 2015 is a printed version of the online database, and as such, the most
comprehensive Buyers Guide ever produced. Copies will be available from the end of March 2015, and will be distributed to all Sassda members. If you would like a copy and you are a non Sassda member, please contact Sassda directly.
