FOR THE RECORD

In the November special awards issue of the Stainless Steel magazine, ND Engineering were the runner up in the manufacturing innovation category.
The article published on the company’s award said that ND Engineering were the designers of the new Falling Film Evaporators, this is incorrect, Tongaat Hulett are in fact the designers.

ND Engineering were also awarded the top accolade in the welding category. They won this award for welding technology used in the DuPont sea water acid coolers, and not “sweater” acid coolers as stated. We apologise for the errors.

TRIBUTE – BASHEER NOORGAT

Basheer Noorgat passed away in early January 2017 at the age of 40 having devoted many years to the stainless steel industry.

His company, NMC Exquisite, has been a very active member of Sassda for almost 20 years, and Basheer joined the Sassda Main Committee in June 2016.

His contribution will be sorely missed by the stainless steel industry.

STAINLESS STEEL ROOFING COMMITTEE FORMED

Stainless steel has been used for roofing and cladding of buildings for almost as long as the metal has been in production. However, in South Africa uptake of the product by the building community has been slow and sporadic.

In years gone by sassda and Middelburg Steel & Alloys, now Columbus Stainless, have made attempts to grow this potentially exciting application, but have been largely unsuccessful in penetrating the hold that aluminium and coated steel have on the market.

This is in spite of the fact that several very successful local examples of stainless steel in roofing applications installed over 30 years ago, and still looking brand new, can be shown. The slow uptake is due to the local building industry’s approach to the lowest initial cost approach. To offer a solution to this, sassda has developed a life cycle costing (LCC) App for smart phones as well as software for your computer which will allow architects, specifiers, quantity surveyors and clients to assess the total cost of various alternative products over the total life of the project.

Sassda is committed to showing the benefits of stainless steel roofing and with this in mind has recently formed a roofing subcommittee to look at the impediments to growth in this area and to find ways to make the product more attractive to the building industry. A kick-off meeting was held at the end of January and a number of steps have been put in place to support the initiative.

In the May/June 1977 edition of the Stainless Steel magazine an article was published on stainless steel for roofing applications and had the following to say: “Initial response to the suggestion of the use of stainless steel as a roofing material was a gasp of disbelief from specifiers, particularly on account of the initial installation cost. But as can be seen from the following, this application of stainless steel can be a cost saver.”

Forty years later, sassda is still committed to proving this perception wrong.

Any sassda members interested in joining this should contact Mankabe More at sassda at info@sassda.co.za or call 011 883 0119.
