Stainless Steel in Cooking Ovens

sam gordonThe “American Metal Market” of October 18, 1965, contains an article on a new use of stainless steel in cooking.

Amana Refrigeration Inc., in conjunction with its parent company, Raytheon Co., has announced plans to market an oven that cooks food with heat generated by the bouncing of microwaves from walls of stainless steel.  A competitor, Tappan, already has a similar unit, sold principally to restaurants.  The Amana unit, however, is designed for use in the home.  It will be about 2ft. wide by 1ft. high  by 18in. deep and is intended as a second oven to be used mainly for heating quick meals.

The parent company has stated that stainless steel had to be used in the new unit because the reflective properties of the metals were required for the heat generation.
